When we ask in prayer, do
we ask with humility?

Message #13 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"
Asking - God’s Way"

by Kaye Johns

For some of us, the most difficult thing to do is to ask for someone’s help. In today’s culture, we’re taught to be independent, self-reliant, self-made.

That makes it difficult for some of us to realize how truly dependent we are on God--that without Him, we can do nothing. It’s even more difficult to acknowledge that truth about ourselves to others. Yet, even Jesus said that without the Father, He could do nothing [John 5:30]. When we come to ask our Father for what we need, we must come as Christ came, in humility, acknowledging our total dependence upon Him. Our requests must come from a humble heart, if we want to please Him [Philippians 2:8].

The humble heart doesn’t compare itself with anyone but God--His greatness, His glory, His majesty. The more we grow in our understanding of Who God is, the more humble we become. The more we’re willing to let go of the responsibility for anything other than seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness [Matthew 6:33], the more He is free to meet all our needs from His riches in glory through Christ Jesus [Philippians 4:19].

Our humility comes through in our attitude in prayer--in what we say and how we say it, even in our posture. An outward expression of humility is kneeling. Kneeling in prayer is not required, but it is appropriate--and it communicates our submission and humility before our holy God, perhaps even more than our words.

Pray with me now -- Lord, help us to humble ourselves, as Jesus did, for we ask in His name, amen.
