Is worship an option in our prayer lives?

Message #8 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Worship in Prayer"

by Kaye Johns

When Jesus taught that we must worship in truth, it wasn’t presented as an option: "...a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.... God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." [John 4:21-24, emphasis added]

We worship in the truth of our personal relationship with the Lord, Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life [John 14:6]. Jesus is also the Word of God [John 1:1], the embodiment of every thought of the divine mind--and the literal Word of God.

From beginning to end, the Bible is a revelation of Jesus. The Old Testament prophesies His coming, the New Testament details His life and teaching. We have the printed Word of God--inspired by the Holy Spirit as it was written, interpreted by the Holy Spirit yet today, that we may know the truth of Who God is.

If we’re not studying the Bible for ourselves, how do we know we are worshiping the true God? Are we taking someone else’s word for it? Are we worshiping the God described in our church doctrine? Or in our pastor’s Sunday sermons? To worship in truth, we must know the truth--intellectually and personally. Are we reading the Bible for ourselves? Have we personally experienced God? Are our prayers of worship based on the truth of Who He is?

Pray with me now -- Father, deliver us from worshiping You on the basis of Who someone else says You are, rather than knowing for ourselves. In Jesus’ name, amen.
