When we worship, what do
we place on the altar?

Message #19 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Worship in Prayer"

by Kaye Johns

Early in Genesis the Lord gives us an example of worship that must be noted, if we are to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Abraham was asked by the Lord to take his beloved son Isaac to Mt. Moriah and offer Him as a sacrifice.

We know the story. Abraham didn’t question God, he simply obeyed. It was to be an act of worship, and Abraham was prepared to carry it through. His knife was in the air when the Lord stopped him: "Do not lay a hand on the boy...do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son...." [Genesis 22:12]

Abraham was being tested, as much for him as for the Lord, to see if God really was first in his life. The question for each of us is, what is the Isaac in our lives?

Jesus told the rich young ruler that he would have to sell everything he had, because Jesus knew the man’s possessions were the most important thing in his life. We must search our own hearts to see what--or who--is in first place. Everything must be placed on the altar as an act of worship. Like Abraham, we may not have to give it up, but He wants to know we are willing.

Pray with me now -- Lord, search our hearts. Show us if there is anything in our lives we must yet give up, that our worship may be complete. In Jesus’ name, amen.
