Does God have a personal name?

Message #1 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"The "I AM" Names of God"

by Kaye Johns

Jehovah, which means "I Am Who I Am," is considered God’s personal name. It’s the name He gave Moses, when He spoke to him from the burning bush [Exodus 3:14].

Moses had said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to the them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?" God said to Moses, "I Am Who I Am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I Am has sent me to you.’" [Exodus 3:13-14]

Jehovah is a divine name considered so holy that the Jewish people would not even say it aloud. It is generally written in Hebrew as YHWH, pronounced YAH-WAY. In English we say, Jehovah. Jehovah is written in most Bibles as "LORD" -- in all capital letters. In the Old Testament, it is the most often used name for God.

Why do you think God called Himself "I Am"? Certainly, it is a statement of His eternal, self-existent nature. He is beyond time. At every moment of our lives, He is present -- always "I Am," never "I Was" or "I Will Be." He was present with us yesterday, He is present today, at this moment, and He is present, waiting for us in the future. Praying to God as Jehovah provides reassurance for tomorrow. He is there, waiting.

Pray with me now -- Jehovah, help us to live in the reality of Your presence, now and at every moment of our lives, for we ask it in Jesus’s name. Amen.
