Do We Want to Pray Powerful Prayers?

Message #1 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Praying Powerful Prayers"

by Kaye Johns

Of course we do. We want to pray prayers that we know God will answer--that’s what makes them powerful. We want to know that the time we spend in prayer is honoring to God and that our prayers make a difference, an eternal difference, in someone’s life.

Anyone who is a Christian can pray that way. Let me give you an example. The Apostle John says, "...if we ask anything according to [God’s] will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him." [1 John 5:14-15]

That’s powerful prayer--knowing that we have what we asked, even as we pray. But first, we have to pray according to God’s will. How do we do that? When a friend needs a job, can we know God’s will? Whether God is waiting for a specific request [James 4:2] or is building our friend’s character or has him under discipline?

The sure way to release God’s power in our friend’s life is to pray something from Scripture that we know is God’s will, something that will have a lasting effect on our friend’s life: "Lord, help him seek first Your kingdom and righteousness, for if he does, You have promised to take care of his needs." [Matt. 6:33] That’s a prayer that we can know is God’s will. It’s a prayer we can be certain He will answer--for our friend’s eternal good and His glory.

Pray with me now -- Father, teach us to pray powerful prayers, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
