Would we describe ourselves as filled
with God’s power?

Message #1 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Asking for the Spirit's Power"

by Kaye Johns

Most days, most times, most often--we probably would not describe ourselves that way. We tend to live beneath the power and the victory that is ours in Christ, perhaps because of the sin of unbelief. We see the way God’s children are meant to live--as children of light [Eph. 5:8], as slaves to righteousness [Rom. 6:18], as those who are dead to sin [Rom. 6:11]--and we throw up our hands, grateful for the grace and mercy of God.

Yet, Jesus said to His disciples, "I am going to send you what my Father has promised...stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." [Luke 24:49] And, "...you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you." [Acts 1:8]

The Holy Spirit is known as the Spirit of Power [2 Tim. 1:7], Who indwells us. If we are believers, His power should be evident to us and to others, as we are living the Spirit-filled life we’re commanded to live [Eph. 5:18].

God loves us, whether or not we choose to live in His power, but that isn’t His best for us. He wants us to ask Him for the Spirit Who indwells us to fill us and to control us [Rom. 8:6], to help us live the abiding life [John 15:1-8] in His strength and power [Luke 11:13]. Do we believe that He will answer such a prayer? Do we want Him to? Are we willing to ask?

Pray with me now -- Father, may we experience Your Spirit as the Endument of Power from on High. May we welcome His power for right-living, in Jesus’ name, amen.
