Is the fruit of the Spirit evident
in our lives?

Message #10 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Asking for the Spirit's Life"

by Kaye Johns

In Galatians Paul encourages us to live by the Spirit, to be led by the Spirit and to keep in step with the Spirit of God. [Gal. 5:16,18,25] In Ephesians, we’re to be filled with the Spirit. [Eph. 5:18] If that is how we live, shouldn’t our character reflect the fruit of the Spirit--love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control? [Gal. 5:22]

Most of us fall short of that, which means we haven’t completely let go of the old self; we haven’t fully and totally surrendered all that we are to His life in us. How do we move from here to there? It’s only in His strength that we can, but how do we experience His strength?

We ask for it. Jesus told us to ask for the Spirit, and assured us God wants to give Him to those who ask [Luke 11:13]. We’re told we have not because we ask not [James 4:2]. Can you think of a more powerful prayer than asking to be filled with the Spirit, so we can live by the Spirit? To be led by the Spirit, that we may keep in step with the Spirit? To manifest His love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control?

Can you imagine God not answering such a prayer? If it isn’t so in our lives, it may be more than not asking. We may not willing to receive.

Pray with me now -- Father, change our hearts, that we may desire to live so as to manifest the Spirit’s life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
