Do we yield to the Breath
of the Almighty?

Message #13 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Asking
for the Spirit's Presence"

by Kaye Johns

Each of the names of God given in Scripture reveals something of His nature and character, something of Who He desires to be in our lives. That is equally true of the names of the Holy Spirit.

The book of Job reveals the Holy Spirit as the Breath of the Almighty: "...it is the spirit in a man, the Breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding." [Job 32:8] The young man Elihu spoke these words to Job and his three friends. He had listened to Job defend himself to his friends as a righteous man who had done no wrong.

Finally Elihu spoke out [Job 32:6-37:24], angry at Job for implying God was wrong to bring these troubles upon him. He said again and again, our righteous and almighty God can do no wrong and He cannot act unjustly. He was saying, in effect, there must be sin, and it is the Breath of the Almighty Who can and will bring understanding and discernment. After Elihu spoke, Jehovah Himself finally addressed Job [Job 38:1-41:34], with the result that Job realized his sin of self-righteousness and repented. [Job 42:6]

The Breath of the Almighty brought Job discernment that was difficult to receive and admit. Do we need His discernment about the sin in our lives? Is there sin we have rationalized away? Failed to recognize? At what cost?

Pray with me now -- Father, give us the Breath of the Almighty, that He might reveal to us the ways in which we grieve His heart. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
