Are we agreeing in prayer?

Message #9 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"The Deeper Life of Prayer"

by Kaye Johns

"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven." [Matthew 18:19a] These are Jesus’ words from Matthew 18.

Jesus taught us the basic, first steps of prayer in His Sermon on the Mount at the beginning of His ministry, but this teaching comes later. Jesus taught about prayer in stages, because He knew His disciples would have to begin at the beginning and grow in the practice of prayer, just as we do. Learning to pray is a process.

Jesus understood that when people pray together, their prayer life together can be no stronger than their individual prayer lives. This is an incredible promise Jesus is making--when two or three agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them. Doesn’t it require spiritual insight and maturity to agree in prayer? To even know what to ask in prayer? This promise is surely for disciples who have heeded Jesus’ earlier teaching on prayer--who are daily seeking to spend time with the Lord, who are following His pattern for prayer, who are living the life that gives their heavenly Father delight in answering their prayers, and who are developing the faith to move mountains.

It follows in the sequence of Jesus’ teaching on prayer, that such disciples who gather to agree in prayer will have whatever they ask.

Pray with me now -- Father, may we grow strong in the practice of prayer, individually and with others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
