How important is surrender and submission?

Message #10 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Jesus' Teaching on Prayer"

by Kaye Johns

When Jesus teaches us to pray "Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" [Matthew 6:10], He alludes to daily surrender and submission.

What is at risk if we fail to surrender? Paul tells us in Romans 12: "I urge you...in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will." [Romans 12:1-2]

It is our surrender that allows the Holy Spirit to fill and transform us. If we are not fully surrendered, God’s Spirit doesn’t have full access to us--and we may not be able to discern the difference between God’s good and pleasing will and His perfect will. We might settle for the good in lieu of God’s best or perfect will for our lives.

Every time we pray, "Thy kingdom come--in me; Thy will be done--in me; here on earth, as it is in heaven--immediately and without question," we are denying self, we are surrendering ourselves as living sacrifices, we are leaving ourselves open to God’s working His perfect will in and through us.

Pray with me now -- Father, may we be willing to give up self, in Jesus’s name, amen.
