Wisdom of the world

Message #8 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Praying for the Lost"

by Kaye Johns

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.’ ...Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. ...We preach Christ crucified.... Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." [1 Corinthians 1:18-20, 21, 23, 24]

We all know people who are so encumbered by the wisdom of the world that they cannot recognize the truth. Their intelligence gets in the way. They see no need for the cross because they don’t recognize or accept their own sinful nature as needing salvation. The cross is foolishness to them.

That’s why we must ask our Father to send His Holy Spirit to convict them of sin. [John 16:7-8] Until they understand that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord [Romans 6:23], the cross will remain foolishness, and they will be lost forever, no matter how worldly wise or intelligent they are.

The Holy Spirit will not overrule their will or make their decision for them; but our prayers release His convicting power. That’s why we mustn’t give up, no matter how long it takes, no matter how many years.

Pray with me now -- Father, we come against the wisdom of the world and ask that Your Holy Spirit convict the lost of the truth of their sins in Jesus’ name, amen.
