Give them ears to hear

Message #15 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Praying for the Lost"

by Kaye Johns

Jesus said, in John 5:24, "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life." There are many who hear the truth and do not believe, and every time they refuse to respond, they run the risk of hardening their hearts until one day, they may no longer even be able to hear.

We read of this danger in Acts 28, from Paul. Scripture reads, "From morning till evening [Paul] explained and declared to them the kingdom of God and tried to convince them about Jesus.... Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe." [Acts 28:23-24]

Would not believe; it was their choice. Paul finally said, "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your forefathers when he said through Isaiah... ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes.’" [Acts 28:26-27]

In our prayers for the lost, we must ask the Lord to grant them the desire to hear. For Jesus said, "There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day." [John 12:48]

We must ask that the Gospel will come to them "...not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction."[1 Thessalonians 1:4]

Pray with me now -- Father, let Your Spirit bring words of truth to those we love--with power and with deep conviction--that they may desire to hear. In Jesus’ name, amen.
