Our Shield and Rampart

Message #8 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Psalm 91"

by Kaye Johns

Paul tells us in Ephesians 6 that we’re to stand in the full armor of God and take up the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, as we move into the spiritual battleground of prayer. We’re to take our stand against Satan as we pray for the saints [Eph. 6:10-18]. Satan can’t have us, he can never snatch us out of God’s hands once we’ve accepted Christ as our Savior and Lord [Romans 8:37-38, John 10:28-29] -- but he can cause havoc in our Christian lives, if we fail to seek God’s protection.

Praying through Psalm 91, for ourselves and for our loved ones, makes clear that God’s intent is to protect us. He wants us to live, to dwell, in His presence, and to find our refuge beneath His wings [Psalm 91:1-4]. That requires effort on our part. Then, in the last half of verse four, we read: "...his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart" [Psalm 91:4b]. A rampart is the stonework on the top of a wall that protects soldiers.

It’s an analogy that reminds me of Paul’s illustration of the armor of God in Ephesians 6. He tells us to take up the shield of faith as part of our armor, our protection from Satan. That’s our responsibility.

Now, in Psalm 91, we see that God’s faithfulness is our shield. It’s His faithfulness that builds our trust in Him, that makes our shield of faith possible. We have to know that in Him there is no shadow of turning [James 1:17], that He is faithful to all His promises [Psalm 145:13], that He remains faithful forever [Psalm 146:6]. We pray that we and our loved ones will know, accept and live in the daily experience of His faithfulness.

Pray with me now--Father, help us live in the assurance that Your faithfulness is our ever-present shield and rampart. We ask, in our Savior’s name. Amen.
