Under His wings

Message #7 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Psalm 91"

by Kaye Johns

Scripture gives us many illustrations of God’s character. One of the most clear is found in Psalm 91, a picture of God’s desire to protect and shelter us, to hide us completely from Satan, so that we can’t be found.

We read in verse four, "He [God] will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge...." It’s the image of a mother hen, protecting her chicks. When she senses danger, she clucks and they know to come running. She ruffles her feathers, and they hide under her wings.

We might consider this scene when we pray for our loved ones, as we’re told to do in Ephesians 6 [v.10-18]. Paul said we’re to pray for their protection from Satan. Verses one and two of Psalm 91 tell us that the one who dwells, or abides, in the shelter of the Lord, the one who trusts the Lord, can expect to be protected from Satan. Verse three tells why -- it is in God’s character to protect us, as a mother hen protects her chicks.

Our Lord will warn us when we’re in danger. But for us to hear Him, we must be living in that abiding relationship, filled with His Holy Spirit [1 John 2:26-27]. In our prayer we must ask the Lord to help us and our loved ones to be sensitive to His voice and willing to seek our refuge beneath His wings -- willing to admit we need Him, willing to concede our dependence upon Him. Otherwise, He may call out His warning, and we’ll go on our way, oblivious to the danger.

Pray with me now--Lord, cover us with Your feathers. May we sense from you when we’re in danger, and choose our refuge beneath Your wings. In Jesus’ name, amen.
