Who may seek God’s protection?

Message #6 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Psalm 91"

by Kaye Johns

In Psalm 91, who is the "fowler?" Verse three reads, "Surely he [God] will save you from the fowler’s snare." We know from the context of the psalm, fowler is describing Satan. Verse 13 refers to the lion and cobra, the great lion and the serpent -- references to Satan found in other Scriptures [Gen. 3:1, 1 Pet. 5:8].

This is a psalm affirming the Lord’s willingness to protect us from Satan, when we know the Lord as the psalmist did; when we choose to dwell, to abide, in His shelter, His presence. When we do, we can boldly declare: surely, He will save us from the fowler’s snare!

Fowlers were hunters who used a weapon much like a boomerang, according to Dr. Mark Bubeck [Conference presentation, Faith Bible Church, DeSoto, Texas, 1995]. They would throw it and stun their prey, knocking them senseless to the ground. It’s an apt illustration of how the devil and his evil spirits try to come after those who know the Lord. They can never snatch us from His hand, once we’ve received Christ as Savior and Lord [John 10:28-29; Romans 8:38-39], but they can stun us -- keep us from living the Christian life in all its fullness.

Our protection comes when we steadfastly resist and choose daily to dwell in the shelter of our protective Lord. But only those who are able to dwell in His shelter can -- those who choose to come through Christ [John 3:3,16; 14:6]. Have you made that definite choice? If not, you still belong to Satan. There is no middle ground [John 3:18,36; 5:24, 8:24,44; 10:9].

You may want to choose Jesus now, with this simple prayer--Lord, I know I’m a sinner and Jesus died for my sins. Forgive me. I now receive Christ as my Savior and my Lord, and give Him my life. In His name, amen.
