For he acknowledges My name

Message #16 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Psalm 91"

by Kaye Johns

"‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name’" [v. 14]. The Lord is talking about you and me, about His children, whom He desires to rescue and protect from Satan. These verses are from Psalm 91, a psalm which affirms that when we seek our shelter in our Most High God, we have no reason to fear, for He is our refuge and fortress.

And it’s because we love Him. When we come to Him in prayer for ourselves or our loved ones, do we ask Him to examine our hearts and reveal the truth of that? Do we love Him? Do we acknowledge His name? How do we know? It’s more than simply verbalizing, "I love you, Lord." Far more.

What did Jesus say? Five times He told us we show our love for Him through our obedience to His teachings, His commandments [John 14:15, 21, 23, 24; 15:10]. Saying it once would have been enough, so He must have wanted the emphasis. We show our love through our obedience. We must not fool ourselves into thinking that we are sheltered and protected by the Lord, if we are leading disobedient lives. Nor should we request shelter and protection for disobedient children or loved ones.

A far more important prayer for each one of us is that the Lord will give the desire to obey, and the enabling power to do it. He has promised He will [Phil 2:13]. And when He does, our protection is assured.

Pray with me now--Father, obedience begins with desire. We ask for that desire, that we may demonstrate our love by obeying Your commands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
