Because He loves us

When we read Psalm 91, it is incredibly affirming. In the first 13 verses, the psalmist assures us that God is our protector -- our shelter, our fortress, our refuge, our shield, our rampart. He hides us, He sends His angels to guard us, He helps us trample Satan beneath our feet. The last part of the psalm, verses 14-16, is written as a personal word from the Lord. These verses begin with His statement: "Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him..." [v.14] Weve been considering Psalm 91 as a prayer we can offer for ourselves and our loved ones, and when we do, there is no more important verse to consider than this: to be assured of Gods shelter and protection from the evil one, we must love Him. What is the first and greatest commandment? "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" [Matt. 22:37; Deut. 6:5]. Everything else in our Christian walk is secondary. It is our love for the Lord, it is our obedience to this commandment, which opens the door for us to dwell in His shelter, to abide in His protection. What then, should our prayer be? Do we ask the Lord to shelter our children? To cover our loved ones with His wings? To enable us to trample the lion and the serpent? Or do we ask for hearts that are yielded, obedient, tender, willing and able to love Him more than anyone or anything else?
Pray with me now--Lord, we want to love You with all our heart and soul and mind and strength. Help us to know You so that we can, for we ask in Jesus name. Amen.
