He will command His angels concerning you

Message #13 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Psalm 91"

by Kaye Johns

Is there any more comforting promise in the Bible than Psalm 91:11: "For [the Lord] will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways." Psalm 91 is a psalm that affirms God’s desire to protect us from Satan and his evil influence, and it makes a strong prayer for ourselves and our loved ones.

We must never fail to take God’s protection seriously. In Daniel 10, we’re shown how real spiritual warfare is. Daniel had prayed and fasted for three weeks, when an angel appeared to him, saying, "...I have now been sent to you.... Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted me 21 days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me..." [Daniel 10:11-13].

The Lord’s angels not only guard us, but they fight spiritual battles on our behalf. This is a psalm affirming God’s desire to protect us from Satan, but are His angels protecting everyone? What is the context of this promise? Psalm 91 begins and ends with the clear statements that God protects those who dwell, or abide, in Him [v.1], those who love Him and acknowledge His name [v.14].

So, do we plead for the protection of God’s angels? Or do we ask for strength to live the life that allows Him to fulfill the promise He’s already made?

Pray with me now--Lord, thank You for angels who guard us and our loved ones. Help us love You and dwell in Your shelter, so that they can. In Jesus’ name, amen.
