No disaster near your tent

Message #12 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Psalm 91"

by Kaye Johns

Psalm 91 declares an affirming promise in verses nine and ten: "If you make the Most High your dwelling -- even the Lord, who is my refuge --then no harm will befall you; no disaster will come near your tent" [v. 9-10].

No harm will befall us, no disaster will come near our tent. This psalm is about Satan’s desire to destroy us, and God’s willingness to keep us safe from him, if we choose to dwell, or abide, in God’s shelter and presence. Does the psalmist really mean no harm, no disaster?

What about Job? Satan couldn’t touch him without God’s permission [Job 1:6-12]. God allowed it for cleansing and purifying, to draw Job nearer to Himself. Satan was allowed to buffet Paul with a thorn in his flesh, to keep him from being conceited [2 Cor. 12:7-10]. Satan had asked to sift Simon Peter like wheat; rather than prevent that, Jesus prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail [Luke 22:31-32].

Satan was not -- is not -- allowed to destroy those who love the Lord. God’s ultimate purpose for each of us is to make us like Jesus [Rom. 8:29], and to that end, every hurtful thing that happens works for the good of those who love God and have been called according to His purpose [Rom. 8:28]. Any harm, any destruction Satan attempts will get through to those who love the Lord only if God sees His holy purpose accomplished in our lives.

When we pray Psalm 91, we might ask the Lord to enlarge our tent to shelter those who have no tent of their own, those who haven’t yet made Him their dwelling -- and pray that soon, they will.

Pray with me now--Father, enlarge the tent of our faith and our love for You, that others may live in the shelter of our prayers, offered in Jesus’ name, amen.
