A thousand may fall at your side

Psalm 91 is an affirmation of Gods willingness to protect those who seek their shelter in Him from Satan. We learn in verse five that we have no reason to fear the arrows, the sinful thoughts from Satan: "You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day..." [v.5]. The affirmation continues in verse 6 -- "nor [will you fear] the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday" [v.6]. Cant you just imagine Satan, stalking about in the darkness, looking to destroy us? But we who dwell in the Lords presence have no reason to fear -- neither direct physical attack, nor an attack on our minds. We can see that from the words the psalmist chose. "Pestilence" and "plague" both have to do with punishment from God -- such as the plague that God sent when David sinned by taking the census, a sin that Scripture tells us was incited by Satan [1 Chron. 21:1]. Verses seven and eight continue the thought, "A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked" [v.7-8]. Many do fall today, in the consequences of their own sin. Many will fall in the day of judgment. And so our prayer must always be for the grace and mercy of salvation that allows our continuing, abiding relationship with the Lord -- that we may daily seek His shelter.
Pray with me now--Lord, we thank You that Satan can have no influence in our lives or our thinking if we choose to abide in You. In Jesus name, amen.
