No arrow by day

Message #10 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Psalm 91"

by Kaye Johns

Psalm 91 can be an affirming prayer for ourselves and our loved ones, because it’s a psalm declaring God’s protection against Satan. We’ve considered the first four verses, and now come to verse five where we read that we "...will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day..." [Psalm 91:5b]. Spiritual warfare is a battle for our minds, and "the arrow" represents the thoughts that the devil and his evil ones try to place in our minds.

Do you remember that King David sinned by taking a census of Israel? It was a prideful thing to do, and Scripture tells us it was evil in the sight of God [1 Chron. 21:7]. Where did King David get the idea? First Chronicles 21 tells us in the opening verse: "Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel" [1 Chron. 21:1]. How did Satan "incite" King David? He placed the idea in his mind. That’s how temptations work. We don’t meet the devil face to face; he must influence our thinking.

Psalm 91:5 is a wonderful promise, taken in the context of the whole psalm. When we are in an abiding love relationship with our Lord, when we seek His protection, we will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day. Satan won’t be able to influence our thinking.

So our prayer is not only an acknowledgment of the truth of the promise, but a plea that God will enable us to maintain the abiding relationship that allows Him to fulfill it.

Pray with me now--Lord, we seek protection for our relationship with You, for when that is right, we will be free from Satan’s influence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
