Taking the sword of the Spirit
Message

When we consider praying for our loved ones to be protected from Satan, we know why were to pray -- because Satan is a real threat to Christians and non-Christians alike. He fights to keep the lost from coming to Christ, and he tries to keep those who have chosen Christ defeated, immature and ineffective. We must not only know why we should pray for our loved ones protection, but we should understand that we are perfectly equipped and empowered -- through our position in Christ, our authority from Christ and our daily walk with Christ which helps us live the mature Christian lifestyle, the "full armor of God" [Eph.6:10-17]. In Ephesians Paul describes the life were to live and gives us the analogy of the armor of God, an illustration of the preparation we must make before we move into the battlefield of prayer against Satan. That is our battle assignment -- were to take up the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, and pray to defeat Satan. Jesus taught us how to do it when He used Scripture in His victory over Satan in the wilderness [Matt. 4:11]. Three temptations, three specific Scriptures [Deut. 8:3; Ps. 91:11,12; Deut. 6:13], and Satan never touched Him. Our defense is to live the Word of God. Our offense is to pray so effectively that we defeat our adversary, the father of lies, with the weapon he cannot stand against -- the truth of the Word of God. And so we pray the Scripture, claiming its promises and its empowering truth for those we love.
Pray with me now--Father, help us learn Your Word, that Your Spirit may call it to mind as we pray. Let us wield it as a weapon against Satan, in Jesus name. Amen.
