Are our prayers one with Jesus’ prayers?

Message #6 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Intercession - Our Privilege"

by Kaye Johns

In His last hours with His twelve disciples, Jesus prayed what is known as His high priestly prayer found in John 17. He prayed for His disciples and for all believers, for you and for me. And today, as our great High Priest [Hebrews 4:14] at the right hand of God, He is still interceding. [Romans 8:34, Hebrews 7:25].

Don’t you find that an amazing truth, that our Lord is right now praying for each of us? That’s been His role for almost two thousand years. One day He will return again, but until then, He is ruling everything through prayer. He "sustains all things by his powerful word." [Hebrews 1:3] And we, who are called to be priests in the royal priesthood, are in a sense called to intercede with Him.

It has been said that every prayer begins in the heart of God. It’s given to us by the Holy Spirit, Who quickens our heart to pray. The Spirit then helps us with our praying, and even when we don’t know what to ask, intercedes for us in accordance with God’s will. The Spirit lifts our prayers to Jesus, Who presents them to the Father with His amen. And our prayers become one with His.

But if we choose not to pray, not to follow the prompting of the Spirit, we are left out of this inspired cycle of prayer. At what cost, to us or to others?

Pray with me now -- Father, help us to be sensitive to the prompting of your Spirit, to always be ready and willing to pray. In Jesus’ name, amen.
