Why are our prayers so important?

Message #15 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Intercession - Our Privilege"

by Kaye Johns

Do you ever stop to think about that? John Wesley and others have said that God does nothing except in answer to believing prayer, and I find that a sobering thought. If God is waiting on my prayers, am I praying enough?

We know we are commanded to pray, asking for what we and others need. We’re told we have not because we ask not, or because we’re not asking from the right motives [James 4:2-3], or because we’re not living lives that allow God to hear our prayers [Isaiah 59:2; Psalm 66:18]. We know we have the Spirit of Prayer [Zechariah 12:10] living within us, if we’re God’s children--leading us, helping us in our prayers. [Romans 8:26-27] We’re admonished to pray without ceasing

[1 Thessalonians 5:17], to pray about everything [Philippians 4:6], to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with every kind of prayer and request and to always keep on praying for all the saints. [Ephesians 6:18]

When Jesus left His disciples the keys of the kingdom [Matthew 16:19], responsible to carry on His ministry on earth, He told them--and us--we must ask, ask, ask, and expect to receive whatever we need. [Matthew 7:7-8]

But do we really believe God waits for our prayers? Or do we think He left us all these commands about prayer as options? Does He mean we’re to pray when we’re not too busy or too tired? That He’ll go ahead and work His will with us or without us? Are we willing to take that chance?

Pray with me now -- Lord, there is much we don’t understand, but we know this: You want us to pray. Help us, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
