Who else is praying?

Message #2 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"
Intercession - Our Responsibility"

by Kaye Johns

Sometimes our intercessory prayers come alongside another’s, reinforcing his requests. Sometimes our prayers for him stand alone because he hasn’t asked for himself or because he’s praying from a life full of unconfessed sins and his prayers aren’t being heard [Isaiah 59:2].

It’s startling that our prayers for someone might be his or her only link with God’s blessing. What if we aren’t praying? Or what if we are praying, but our own sins are not confessed and God isn’t listening to our prayers? [Psalm 66:18]

But do we have to ask? Doesn’t our Father know what we need before we ask? Yes, Jesus told us that in Matthew 6:8--right before He gave us the Model Prayer, which teaches we’re to ask for our daily needs [Matthew 6:11]. But when Jesus said our Father knows our need, He didn’t say our Father would give us what He knows we need apart from our asking.

But what about seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness, and "all these things--food, shelter, clothing-- will be given to us"? [Matthew 6:33] Does that say, "without asking? without prayer?" Not in my Bible.

God wants us to ask, for ourselves and for each other. When we don’t, we may limit what He will do in and through our lives, or those for whom we should be praying. God has chosen to work through our prayers, and without them, He very well may not.

Pray with me now -- Lord, forgive us when we don’t consider our prayers as important as You do. Help us to make prayer a real priority, in Jesus’ name, amen.
