Are we standing in the gap?

Message #17 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"
Intercession - Our Responsibility"

by Kaye Johns

Our Lord not only wants us to stand in the gap, praying for others; He is actually seeking those of us who will. In Ezekiel we read, "I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land...." [Ezekiel 22:30]

The Hebrew word for "gap" means a breach, an opening in a wall. In Ezekiel’s time, cities were protected by walls that opposing forces tried to breach so their soldiers could enter. Our Lord is looking for people who will stand in the gap in those broken walls, and pray.

All those years later, the apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6, said that our assignment is to stand our ground and "always keep on praying for all of the saints."[Ephesians 6:18] Standing in prayer is serious business for "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world." [Ephesians 6:12] We live in a world where Satan and his evil spirits are trying to breach the walls of our lives.

But who are we, to take a stand against Satan? We are children of God, making our prayers available, that they may be used for the release of God’s power in the lives of others. All He asks us to do in standing our ground is to make ourselves available for prayer. He will do the rest.

Pray with me now -- Father, help us to be the intercessors You are seeking, willing to stand in prayer, in Jesus’ name, amen.
