Are words essential when we pray?

Message #13 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"
Intercession - Our Responsibility"

by Kaye Johns

In Ephesians Paul tells us we’re to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests" and to "always keep on praying for all the saints." [Ephesians 6:18] That’s a pretty heavy load for any of us to carry, and the good news is, we don’t have to carry it alone.

It’s hard enough to pray for ourselves, but when we begin to pray for others, there is such a sense of responsibility to get it right. Sometimes we may be asked to pray for people we hardly know, or we may pray for people we do know and love, but we haven’t got a clue what to ask.

Paul doesn’t want us to give up and not pray, so he clearly says we are to "pray in the Spirit." We’re to be led by the Spirit, inspired by the Spirit, and sometimes the Spirit simply takes over for us, as Paul explains in Romans 8: "...the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express." [Romans 8:26]

That’s why we should never feel our prayers are inadequate or be self-conscious about praying--because as we are praying the best we know how, the Holy Spirit is reading our hearts and interceding according to God’s will [Romans 8:27]. The key is, we have to be praying.

Pray with me now -- Precious Spirit of Prayer, thank You for taking our prayers and making them what You want them to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
