Do our prayers bring glory to the Father?

Message #8 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

Six times Jesus promised His disciples during their last days together that they could have "whatever they asked" in His name [John 14:13,14; 15:16; 16:23,24,26]. These promises are for His disciples today, but we must be careful to note that all but one of these promises had an additional qualifying condition directly attached. We’re to pray in His name--that is, according to His character and nature, united with Him as one--and, in John 14:13 He adds, "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father." Whatever we ask in Jesus’ name must be something that will bring glory to the Father--if we want to have whatever we ask.

Do we stop to consider whether it will glorify God to answer our prayers? What kind of requests would that be? Certainly, prayers that will allow Him to answer according to His character will glorify Him. Answers that will cause Him to be honored or acknowledged for Who He is and what He has done, will glorify Him. Requests to advance His kingdom, will glorify Him.

But we must also consider--if we’re not living lives that will glorify God, how will it honor Him to answer any of our prayers? We just can’t separate our prayer lives from the life we’re living, can we?

Pray with me now -- Holy Father, help us live and pray in ways that glorify You, that Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, may do whatever we ask in His name--as we ask now, amen.
