Why would Jesus want His disciples to
have whatever they asked for in prayer?

Message #7 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

The closer Jesus drew to the cross, the more amazing His prayer promises to His disciples became. Listen to this, from John 14: "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.’" [John 14:12-14]

Jesus meant that literally then, and He means it now. These were the men who were to continue His work on earth, as we’re to do today. He wants us to understand that we can have whatever we need to further His work in the world. He wants to empower us, through our prayers, to do even greater things than He did. Do we really believe that’s possible in our lives? Do we ask for it? Do we want it?

That’s a key issue--we have to want to do kingdom work, to live as committed disciples. Then we can have anything we ask, to further His work in the world. We can’t remove the promise from the context, but think what it says: we can have anything we ask--for His work.

Pray with me now -- Lord, probe our hearts. Do we desire to do Your kingdom work? Or is our focus on self? Help us see the truth, for we ask in Your name. Amen.
