Do we pray in Jesus’ authority?

Message #6 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

When Jesus left His disciples behind to carry on His work, in a way it was the same as a business owner giving his manager, by right of his position in the company, the authority he needs to do whatever is necessary to keep the business supplied and moving forward.

Jesus taught His disciples, in their last hours together, "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive...." [John 16:24] In the context of the passage, Jesus had been explaining to His disciples that He would be going to the Father. Until then, they had no need to ask for anything in His name--He was there to meet their needs. But He intended to leave them the authority of His name in order to carry on His work, after He was gone. That’s why the promises were so unlimited; He wanted them to have whatever they asked in His name to continue His kingdom work.

These were His chosen disciples, the ones He was depending on to build and nurture His church. They had been personally trained, and they knew Him well. He knew He could count on them, and so He left them with access to all they would need through the authority of His name, in prayer.

We have that same unlimited access, when we come as His disciples devoted to His kingdom work.

Pray with me now -- Lord, what an awesome responsibility You have given us, to use Your name. Help us use it wisely, as we pray we do now, amen.
