Do we believe--before we see the
answer to our prayers?

Message #3 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

In His last days with His disciples, Jesus taught them a deeper understanding of prayer, that they could ask for anything and receive it. He was about to leave them, and He wanted them to believe that through the power of prayer, they would be provided with all they needed.

On their way to Jerusalem Jesus said, "Have faith in God. ...I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." [Mark 11:22-25]

Where does that kind of faith come from? Elijah had it. When he began to pray for rain, it hadn’t rained for three years, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Yet as he prayed, he sent his servant to look for clouds seven times--until the rain came. [1 Kings 18:41-45] Elijah’s faith wasn’t in his prayers, but in our awesome God who is able to stop and start the rain at will.

Jesus was making His promise to 12 ordinary men, and to you and me--in whom He will build extraordinary faith as we learn to pray and trust as Elijah did.

Pray with me now -- Lord, please help us never to limit what You are willing to do, by failing to realize how great You are. Give us Elijah’s faith! In Jesus’ name, amen.
