What did Paul request in prayer?

Message #19 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

Do you want to know how to be sure you are always praying in the perfect will of God for those you love? It’s important to most of us, because we realize we’ve been promised when we pray in His will, we can have whatever we ask [1 John 5:14-15]. We want our prayers to be answered, and for the answers to be such that God gives what we’ve asked--or exceedingly, abundantly more [Ephesians 3:20].

But aren’t there times when we’re just not sure? We must be careful that we are not praying more from sympathy than God’s will. Sometimes the disaster, the crisis in someone’s life that we would want removed is the very thing God is using to build his or her character, to mature him in his walk with Him, to prepare her for Christian ministry somewhere down the road. It’s difficult for us to discern.

That’s why Paul’s prayers are so valuable to us. Paul didn’t pray for "daily bread." He prayed for things like the Spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Christ better [Ephesians 1:17], for the power to grasp the love of Christ [Ephesians 3:18], for discernment to know what is best and pure and blameless [Philippians 1:10]. When prayers like that are answered in a person’s life, the daily bread needs are taken care of according to God’s will where it matters most--in support of the heart, the character, the walk with Christ.

Pray with me now -- Lord, thank You for giving us Paul’s prayers. Help us to learn from them, that our prayer life might be enriched. In Jesus’ name, amen.
