Do we take obedience seriously?

Message #15 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

We should, because the apostle John did. He writes in First John, "...if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him." [1 John 3:21-22]

That’s one of at least ten promises that we can have whatever we ask from God, and it comes with three conditions: our hearts must not condemn us, we must obey His commands, and do what please Him.

Does God’s grace, His amazing grace, negate the conditions of the prayer promises? Aren’t our prayers heard because of Christ’s righteousness? We can never be obedient enough on our own to please Him, can we?

It’s our perspective which must change. It’s true--it’s all of Christ, all of grace. When we are saved, we receive every spiritual blessing. It’s as though God knows every prayer He wants to answer, and those answers are in a bank account that we must access. James tells us how: we must ask, and we must not ask amiss.

The conditions of the prayer promises are like guidelines, like access codes that allow us to withdraw from our account all that God intends us to have. He’s given us the guidelines, and it’s our choice whether or not to meet them. When we do, we can have whatever we ask. Whatever we ask!

Pray with me now -- Lord, give us the desire and the strength to live obedient lives that please You, with hearts that do not condemn us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
