Are we living in the power of the Lord?

Message #11 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

Jesus promised His disciples that "at that day" they could have whatever they asked in His name [John 16:23-26]. The context of John 16 reveals that day as Pentecost, the day when His Holy Spirit would come to live in the hearts of believers.

Jesus repeated His promise: "In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete." [John 16:23-24]

Jesus knew, and had already told them, the Holy Spirit would come to guide them into all truth [John 16:13]. At that day and today, that’s still His role, to guide us into all truth, convicting us of the sins in our lives, and leading us to confess and repent, helping us understand Scripture, inspiring and guiding our prayers. He lives in us and through us in the abiding love relationship Jesus described as the Vine and the branch.

Jesus knew that these ordinary men would need--and would have--the enlightenment and the power of the Holy Spirit within them after Pentecost, giving them the spiritual depth and maturity to meet the conditions for His prayer promises--that they might have whatever they asked. He has equal expectations for us. Are we settling for less?

Pray with me now -- Lord, thank you for that day and every day that Your Holy Spirit of Truth lives in us, in Jesus name, amen.
