Who is able to pray in Jesus’ name?

Message #10 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series "Prayer Promises"

by Kaye Johns

"In that day, you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name." [John 16:23]

Jesus spoke with His disciples during their last hours together, explaining that He would be going to the Father [John 16:17]. He gave them a remarkable prayer promise, that the Father would give them whatever they asked in His name--and He qualified it by saying "in that day."

What day? Why would any day make a difference? "In that day" in the context of this passage of Scripture [John 16:19-33], refers to Pentecost, the day when the Holy Spirit would come to His disciples. Today, Jesus’ disciples receive His Spirit the moment they are born again into the kingdom of God [John 3:5-7]. It is only through Him [John 14:6], only by His Spirit [Ephesians 2:18], that we have access to the Father with any of our prayers.

The question for each of us is: has that day come for us? Have we been born again into the kingdom of God [John 3:3]? How do we know we have? We know because there is evidence in our lives--all things become new, as we begin to understand the meaning of Scripture [John 14:26, 1 John 2:27], and to desire the things of God [Psalm 37:5].

If you’re not sure, perhaps you want to pray with me now -- Holy Father, I believe that Jesus is Your Son, and I desire to receive Him as Savior and Lord of my life. I know I’m a sinner, and I ask forgiveness for my sins, in Jesus’ name, amen.
