What is your prayer life like?

Message #1 (of 20) from the PrayerPower radio series
"Beginning a Life of Prayer"

by Kaye Johns

What is the one word you might use to describe your prayer life? Fulfilling? Effective? Something less? I prayed for years and I can’t say my prayer time was ever fulfilling or effective. It just sort of happened, especially when I needed the Lord’s help.

For much of my adult life, my prayer life never really changed. Has yours? Or do you pray as I prayed, the same kinds of prayers in the same way about the same things as you did five years ago? or ten? or twenty?

Oh, I prayed. I prayed in church. I prayed in the shower in the mornings, or whenever I thought about it during the day. But I was never sure God was listening. I felt like a lamp looking for a place to plug in, for a connection to the Source of Power.

Though I didn’t realize it, that’s exactly what the problem was -- I wasn’t connected to the Lord, not in a real or personal way. If you had asked what my prayer life was like a few years ago, and if I had answered honestly -- I might have said "weak" or "inadequate."

What about today? I’m not sure I could select just one word, but "real...vital...essential" come to mind. What made the difference? I learned how to pray, I learned when to pray -- and I began to know the One to Whom I pray. The Lord became real to me. Just as He will to any of His children, through prayer.

Pray with me now -- Lord, we want You to be real to us. We want to know that when we pray, You are listening, that You are pleased. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
